Dimapur, Nov. 19. Dr. K. M. Bujarbaruah, honourable Vice Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat, together with Smti Krishna Gohain, the Registrar, visited the Institute for Culture And Rural Development (I-CARD) campus on 13th November, 2011. They were accompanied by Dr. Konwar from North East Institute of Science And Technology (NEIST), Jorhat. The purpose of the visit was to acquaint themselves with the activities of I-CARD.
During the three hour visit, the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar had a chance to see the various sections of the cultural campus and enjoy a half hour show by the inmates of Life Plus. Both the dignitaries were extremely pleased at the initiatives of I-CARD, especially that of empowering school dropouts and refining the lives of the marginalized tribal people. The Vice Chancellor gave a gift to the young artists for a special dinner. He was happy to see the almond trees in the campus, the first in the entire North East of India, he said. He has asked for 200 trees to be brought from Kerala for the University.
I-CARD focuses on empowering tribal communities to discover their identities and achieve greatness. It experiments its strategies in the Mising tribe of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
In his brief talk, the Vice Chancellor, praised I-CARD for its efforts, and promised to take forward the idea of making the rural development trainings given by I-CARD into a diploma Course, under the Assam Agricultural University. He suggested other ways of collaborating with I-CARD in the future. The Registrar, Smti K. Gohain, said, ''I am touched by your presentations and your welcome.''
Their visit was followed by four alumni of National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, who came to interview the director of I-CARD and to document its activities, for a special project under the Government of India. The second NID in India is to be set up in Jorhat in a few years' time. I-CARD, therefore, has all the chances of entering into a collaboration for textile designing and ethnic handloom.
