59th Annual Meet of Xavier Board at Maram

Dimapur, Oct. 26. DBCMaram 26 Oct: 59 Annual Meet of Xavier Board for Higher Education in India was held on 25 to 28 October 2009 at Don Bosco College, Maram, Senapati, Manipur. The meeting was a grand success according to the report. The executive meeting was attended by 26 dignitaries from all over the country.
It was the first of its kind held at DBC Maram. The entire college with all its machinery was engaged in making the meeting a grand success.
The meeting started off when the dignitaries arrived here on 25 evening after their trip to Moreh. The principals, co-opted and other board members were welcomed by the Don Bosco Boys' Hostel along with the principal and vice-principal and others. It was indeed wonderful to see them stepping down the bus after a long and ordeal journey on the national highway of Manipur. The executive members were welcomed with warm greetings and welcome songs.
The inaugural ceremony took place on 26. The chief guest of the occasion was the Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, Prof. Amuba Singh. The other dignitaries of the day were the Registrar of Manipur University, Prof. N Lokendra Singh; Rev. Provincial, Fr. James Poonthuruthil, the president of the governing body of DBC, Maram; 26 executive members of the Xavier Board of Higher Education in India. Fr. Provincial while extending a warm welcome to the chief guest and others reiterated the commitment of Salesian Province of Dimapur in bringing quality education and higher education to the most backward areas of the province.
Fr. Benny James, the Principal of Don Bosco College, Maram emphasised the various aspects of Catholic education at higher education. Fr. Joseph Xavier, the president of Xavier Board of Higher Education gave the presidential address in which he opined the need for a qualitative improvement in universal education for a just and transforming society. The board meeting had as its theme ''The Innovative Practices in Education for Transforming society.'' Today every educational institution is emphasising the need for such qualitative education which would change the society for better.
Prof. N Lokendra Singh, the Registrar of Manipur University, gave the key note address on the theme of the meeting. He expressed the need to keep the quality of colleges in order to meet the bench mark made by National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC). Prof. Amuba Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Manipur, congratulated the College for its fine performance in every sphere. He also appreciated the college for getting accredited by NAAC with ''B'' grade.
The inaugural ceremony was interspersed with beautiful items from students which mesmerised the audience. The first book of the college edited by N Lokendra Sing, Jose PD and Benny James  was released by Prof. Amuba Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of MU during the programme. The title of the book is ''Historical and Sociological Aspects of Migration in North East India''.The board members were taken around the campus by Fr. MD Varghese. They were full of praise and appreciation for the college which had made a tremendous progress in the past nine years of existence. They also recognised the substantial contribution the college makes to the neighbourhood by way of quality higher education. Fr. James Poonthuruthil, the Provincial of Dimapur Province, officiated the Holy Eucharist on the first day of the board meeting. In his homily he stressed the need of the educators to enter into the realm of the captives to free them from unnecessary enslavement.  ''The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and sight to the blind, to free the oppressed, and to announce the Lord's year of Mercy'' (Luke: 4.18-19). On the second day, the Holy Eucharist was presided over by Fr. Nelie Linus, the Vicar General of Imphal Archdiocese.
The board members had their own business meeting and serious deliberations in the newly built up ITES centre. The visitors had the chance to witness a number of cultural items on the evening of 26 Oct 2009 in the college auditorium. Fr. PO Sebastian, the rector of DBC, Maram thanked the board members for choosing college as its meeting place. He said that their presence there added joy to the young people's lives. Many of the board members who are principals of colleges in the country extended a hearty welcome to the DBC, Maram students for their higher studies in their colleges. This proposal was accepted with a thunderous clap. The meeting came to an end with a grand Rex Band show on 27 of Oct 2009.
