Father Jose Kochamkunnel SDB appointed as the New Provincial of the Province of Chennai By BIS CorrespondentChennai, Feb. 10. Father Jose Kochamkunnel SDB was installed as the 14th Provincial of the Salesian Province of Chennai on 2 February during the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Father Maria Arokiam Kanaga, the General Councillor for the region of South Asia, in the presence of a large gathering which included some 300 Salesians and members of the Salesian Family at the Provincial House in Chennai.
The Profession of Faith pronounced by the new provincial was received by Father Kanaga, acting in the name of the Rector Major, Father Angel Fernandez Artime.
During the Eucharistic celebration, Father Maria Arokiam Kanaga read out the Rector Major's letter appointing Father Jose as the Provincial of Chennai Province and administered the Profession of Faith.
After the Eucharist, felicitating the new provincial, the outgoing provincial Father Jayapalan Raphael said, ''Father Jose Kochamkunnel is God's gift to us through the Rector Major. He is qualified in Youth Ministry. He is an able administrator, a competent counsellor and a highly appreciated animator of youth as well as religious; He is also a much sought-after retreat preacher. His wide pastoral experience and his personal goodness, besides the many other sterling qualities he has, will stand in good stead as he takes up the reins of the province.''
Father Jose Kochamkunnel, in his reply, thanked the outgoing Provincial, Father Jayapalan, for his dynamic leadership with a strong commitment in favour of the poorest of the poor during the last six years. He spoke about his recent meeting with the Rector Major who, after studying the feedback received from the confreres of the province, had proposed to him a roadmap for the coming six years of his ministry, which he hoped to fulfill with the cooperation of everyone.
Three books were released on the occasion. 1) ''Living for the Poor - Like Jesus with Don Bosco'', a collection of the inspiring reflections taken from the Circulars of Father Jayapalan while he was provincial; 2) ''Jesus Every Day - Christian Living in our Times'' by Father John Alexander SDB; and ''Come Relax'' by Father Jesudas Amaladas SDB, a set of Gospel reflections.
