Father Jose Kochamkunnel SDB appointed as the new Provincial of the Salesian Province of Chennai

Chennai, Dec. 23. The Rector Major of the Salesians, Father Angel Fernandez Artime, has appointed Father Jose Kochamkunnel SDB (K. M. Jose) as the new Provincial of the Salesian Province of Chennai for the years 2017-2023. Father Jose succeeds Father Jayapalan Raphael who will complete his term next month. The installation of the new Provincial will be held on 2 Feb 2017.
Father Jose Kochamkunnel was born on 22 Feb 1956 at Mannoor, Kottayam District in Kerala. He joined the Salesian aspirantate at Don Bosco, Tirupattur, in June 1969 and did his novitiate at Yercaud and professed as a Salesian on 24 May 1975. He made his perpetual profession on 24 May 1982. He had his theological formation in Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore, and was ordained a priest on 31 December 1985 at Manoorpally, Kottayam, by Bishop Abraham Virthakulangara of Khandwa.

All through his 30 years of priestly ministry, he has held leadership roles in the Province. He has been the Director of Youth Animation Centre at Ennore for eight years, and Rector of the communities at the Refuge, Broadway; the Provincial House; Sacred Heart College, and the Don Bosco Renewal Centre in Bangalore. He was the Vice Provincial for three years (2005-2008). He is an able administrator and a competent counsellor and a highly appreciated animator of youth as well as religious.; he is also a much sought-after retreat preacher. Always friendly and affable, he is known for his personal concern for  every individual in the community, his deep attachment to Don Bosco and to the Salesian ethos, and his great love for the young and the poor.

Father Jose holds a bachelor's degree in Physics from Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur, and a Masters in Psychology from Annamalai University and a Masters in Youth Ministry from Fordham University, New York, USA.
