Chennai, Feb. 6. Not to be served but to serve! These words formed the backdrop of not just the stage but the whole happening! Hailing from Kalleri, a village in the Pondy-Cuddalore diocese, Fr. Jayapalan is a total salesian product, explained Fr. Stanislaus Swamikannu, the outgoing provincial. The day was marked with a solemn Eucharist followed by felicitations. With a joyful atmosphere and the prayerful singing by DILYM (Don Bosco Inner Light Youth Ministry), the Liturgy was a fitting thanks to Fr. Stanislaus Swamikannu, the Provincial handing over and a loving empowerment to Fr. Jayapalan Raphael, the Provincial taking over. Present at the altar were Fr. Anjukandam the Provincial of Bangalore, Frs. John Peter, Vincent Durairaj and Bellarmine the former Provincials of INM, Fr. J. Joseph the first Rector of Fr. Jayapalan, Fr. Samuel Mundol from the Province of Calcutta and the Deputy Secretary General of Commission for Catechetics, CCBI along with more than a hundred other concelebrants comprising of Salesians, diocesans and other religious like Jesuits, Redemptorists and Franciscans. There were a large number of members belonging to the Salesian Family and lay people associated with us, present adding fervor to the moment.
The solemn and significant Liturgy began at 10 am as planned and came to its conclusion around 12 noon. With a short break the felicitations resumed and there was an abundance of gratitude and celebration in the air. Fr. Stan began the process by thanking everyone for the past six years of cooperation and collaboration. He then felicitated the new provincial, Fr. Jayapal. Fr. Jayapal, on his turn expressed much optimism in taking up the responsibility entrusted to him in this appointment.
The hosting community of Rinaldi Juniorate, SIGA deserves a BIG appreciation for the meticulous planning and the splendid arrangements. With the liturgy and the felicitations done, the attention turned to Citadel, the Provincial house for the lunch. All the participants partook of the fellowship meal, wished Fr. Jayapalan and returned feeling of a fresh start. With the initial ceremonies over, now the Province has the new provincial in place... let's get going and reach newer heights!
