Shillong, Nov. 3. The year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Mawlai Parish in the Northeastern city of Shillong was concluded with a solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by Archbishop Dominic Jala, Salesian Provincial Fr. George Maliekal,  and a large number of clergy, religious and laity on 26 October.
The Eucharist that brought the yearlong celebrations to a close was marked by the presence of over 5000 faithful together with their pastor Archbishop Jala, himself a parishioner of Mawlai, Fr. George Maliekal, the Parish Priest Fr. Roland Kharkrang,  and over forty other priests and more religious personnel.

At the cultural program that followed the Eucharistic celebration, former parish priests Fr. Gervasis SDB and Fr. Augustine Koottala SDB spoke expressing their great joy at having got the opportunity to minister to the fervent Catholic community of Mawlai.

St. Dominic Savio Parish, earlier known as Sacred Heart Parish, adopted its present name in 1954, the year the teenage saint was canonized. Fr. Correngia, the parish priest at that time chose Dominic Savio also as the patron of the newly constructed church (1957) at the Parish centre. Its first parish priest was Fr. Di Benedetto Fiori (1939) of Italian origin.

During the seventy five years of its existence Mawlai parish has given birth to numerous communities and many parishes. It has also been a fertile ground for vocations to priesthood and religious life.

The General Secretary of the Parish Council Mr. Francis Kharhunai, with his experience, expertise and dedication organized meticulously the year-long celebrations.
