Shillong, Aug. 28. The premier Don Bosco institution in the Barak Valley - Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Silchar - stepped into DB Bicentenary year in style on 16th August, with a 'homage to Don Bosco' involving over a thousand students of the school.
The celebrations that began with the hoisting of the bicentenary flag by the new Principal, Fr. Joseph Nelson, together with fellow Salesians Fr. Raphael Tham and Br. Regi focused on the charismatic person of Don Bosco. Addressing the staff and students on the occasion, Fr. Nelson highlighted the extraordinary qualities of Don Bosco, which saw him through the many difficult situations that he encountered in his life of service to the young. He exhorted the students and the staff to make their own the motto 'Each One, Teach One' and thus to help the poor and the needy of the society.

The short program that followed displayed the spirit of innovation and artistry that students and staff of the school were always known for.

When the Salesian province of Guwahati started a school on the outskirts of Silchar town in 2003, it added a whole new area to the Salesian map of North East - the Barak Valley, comprising the three districts of Hailakandi, Karimganj and Cachar in Assam. From humble beginnings, the school has steadily progressed and has today become a synonym for quality education in the Valley.

The complex known as 'Don Bosco Centre', also houses 'Bosco Tech', a technical wing that imparts formal and non-formal technical education to disadvantaged youth from the three districts of Barak Valley and beyond. The Centre, it may be recalled, served as the Provincial headquarters of the Salesian Province of Silchar for over a year until it moved to Shillong about a year ago.

The bicentenary flag was also hoisted in the upcoming new campus in the presence of the school children.
