International Conference in Computer Science held at St. Anthony's College By Fr. Joby Joseph SDBShillong, Sep. 21. A Two-day International Conference on Emerging Trends and Applications in Computer Science (ICETACS-2013)was held at Siloam, Barapani, the extension centre of St. Anthony's College, Shillong. The IEEE-sponsored Conference began with two back-to-back Tutorial Sessions on 12 September at the College Auditorium for the participants and the students of the Department of Computer Science. Dr. Pushpak Bhattacharyya, Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Mumbai gave two presentations on Sentiment Analysis.
The Conference was formally inaugurated on 13th September. The Chief Guest at the Inauguration was Prof. P. Shukla, Vice Chancellor, North Eastern Hill University. Prof. P. Shukhla released the Proceedings of the Conference and delivered a short message on the occasion.
The Key Note Address of the Conference was presented by Dr. Brian Subirana, Affiliate Professor, MIT Field Laboratory. His topic was Strategy and the Future of Software Applications.
The Second Invited Lecture was delivered by Dr. Pushpak Bhattacharyya, Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Mumbai, who spoke about Determining the exact relationship between Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning.
The Third Invited Lecture ''Global Trends in Information Technology and their Implication'' , was delivered by Dr. Raghu Krishnapuram, Associate Director, IBM Research, India.
The Fourth Lecture was presented in absentia by Dr. Sandhya Chintala, Executive Director, NASSCOM through a pre-recorded video sent ahead by her to the organizers. She elaborated on Talent Acquisition and Transformation as a new A New paradigm .
The Conference concluded with the Valedictory Function in which Shri P. C. Pankaj, Chairman and Managing Director, North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited was the Chief Guest. Certificates were distributed to the presenters of the Papers and to the listeners.
The Proceedings of 2013 1st International Conference on Emerging Trends and Applications in Computer Science bears the imprints of Fifty Five (five abstracts and fifty papers) brilliant minds on various aspects and fields of Computers and their applications. These papers are the select fifty from a collection of 300 research papers submitted to the conference, after a series of check of plagiarism and double review by subject experts. Of the fifty papers featured in the Proceedings, forty-eight were presented by the authors in four different sessions held simultaneously. In all, there were 8 tracks with as many as 6 papers being presented in every track.
At the end of the first day of the Conference, the participants visited the Don Bosco Museum in Mawlai, the biggest Cultural Museum in Asia, and then returned to the venue for a Cultural Programme presented by the students of the College. Other important events of the Conference also included an exciting trip to Cherrapunjee, the erstwhile wettest place on earth.
The ICETACS 2013 was organized with the technical sponsorship of IEEE Kolkata Section and hence all the papers presented at the event will be indexed and published in IEEE Xplore. The sponsors for the event were North Eastern Council (NEC), University Grants Commission (UGC), North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) , State Bank of India and CSIR-India.
Being the first ever international conference organized by the college and the only one of its type in Computer Science with IEEE recognition held in the State, the event had a great significance. It brought together academicians, researchers and industry experts from within and outside the country under one umbrella. For the department of computer science, this is a unique land mark and to the College, another feather in its cap.
