Kokborok Magazine to mark 15 years of Salesian film company

Shillong, Nov. 14. Agartala, November 14 2012: The Salesians of Don Bosco will launch today (14 Nov) a monthly magazine in the Kokborok language of Tripura and hold a function to mark 15 years of film making in the northeastern Indian state.   General Councilor for Social Communications of Don Bosco Society, Rome, Prof.   Filberto Gonzalez, will release the magazine at Don Bosco Peace Centre, Agartala, the state capital.  

On the occasion Prof.   Gonzalez will also felicitate Sampari Pictures the only Don Bosco film production company registered under Eastern India Motion Picture Association.   The pilot issue of the 32-page socio-cultural and literary magazine, Aitorma (Morning Star), is targeting initially some 40,000 readers.  

''There isn't even a single regular publication in Kokborok language that has the common man in mind.   Aitorma is our effort to address this acutely felt lacunae among Kokborok speakers,'' says its editor Binod Debbarma.   Salesian Father Joseph Pulinthanath, an award winning Kokborok film director, said his congregation considers culture and language as ''unavoidable areas that need looking into if one is to engage meaningfully in the development of a people'' . 

Magazine publisher Salesian Father Benny Moshahary is hopeful and optimistic that the venture will prove to be ''a rallying point'' for Kokborok language and its practitioners.

Twenty years of Don Bosco presence in the state is marked by some significant ventures in this direction, including production of mainstream cinema, which gave world exposure to Kokborok language and to some problems suffered by its speakers.

The socio-cultural monthly, the publishers hope, will also bring about a better culture of reading among the Kokborok speakers.

Over the years, unresolved linguistic issues of Kokborok language have spilled over into social, political and economic realms and adversely affected the lives of Tripura's indigenous communities.

The beleaguered Kokborok language has over one million speakers in Tripura and in parts of adjoining Bangladesh.
