Konsam Joshua Lyngdoh, in his concluding statement of the presentation, said that it is important that we make an all out effort to improve the state of mathematics in our country. ''To start with, learning mathematics should be made more interesting at the basic levels. We need good mathematics teachers at all levels. And to secure that, it is important that the teaching profession be made socio-economically attractive.
''There is, however, room for some cautious optimism about the future. We have institutes like the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), the Indian Statistical Institute, the Indian Institute of Science and the IITs which are making serious efforts to raise the standards of research and scholarships in mathematics.
''With all these efforts, I am sure, one day in the near future we will be able to reclaim our worthy place in world mathematics'', he said.
