Abroad, Jun. 20. Fr Amaladoss Sanjone of the Salesian Province of Tiruchy defended his Thesis for Licentiate ''The Spiritual Care of Young People through Some of the Writings of Don Bosco'' on a hot and sultry Roman evening on June 19, 2012, at the Salesian Pontifical University.
Guided by Fr. Aldo Giraudo (one of the foremost Don Bosco scholars) and examined by a panel consisting Fr. Morand Wirth (acknowledged Salesian expert) and Don Zevini (president of the panel), Fr. Amaladoss maintained a calm and cool composure during the entire proceeding, despite the soaring mercury.

The two-pronged scope of the thesis, highlights the spiritual teachings of Don Bosco in his attempt to help the young grow spiritually and attempts a theological hermeneutics through which youth ministers of today can provide spiritual guidance.

The thesis comprises three chapters. Chapter 1 uses the historical-descriptive approach to present in three parts the primary sources of the study. Chapter 2 is an analytical, theologico-hermeneutical reflection on Don Bosco's vision of spirituality in four sections. Chapter 3 presents a series of personal critical reflections based on: 'Juvenum Patris' of Bl. John Paul II, the Constitutions of the Society of St. Francis de Sales, and the 23rd General Chapter of the Salesian Congregation.

Fr. Amaladoss says ''having discovered Don Bosco quite early in my childhood, I have thirsted to understand him deeper and these two years at the Institute of Spirituality in the Faculty of Theology, have proved valuable in this task.'' On further prodding he adds ''in this day and age, if we are to impact the lives of the young and enable them to develop holistically, I personally feel we need to listen to Don Bosco, practice what he did and accompany the young. I am happy the Strenna for the coming year and the General Chapter XXVII will be for us an opportunity to do this.''

The 'hot' proceedings of the thesis-defense was laced with lighter moments providing the gathered audience some respite, as Fr Amaladoss replied to the barrage of pointed missiles directed at him by the examining panel. The final outcome was the unanimous appreciation and praise for having embarked on a decidedly difficult topic. With cheers and applause, Fr Amaladoss was declared a licence-holder in Salesian spirituality, so that he can apply the theory in practice as he heads back to his province.

BIS South Asia applauds and wishes Fr. Amaladoss the very best as he continues to impact young lives through his life after Don Bosco's example.
