Panjim, Feb. 7. The Department of Social Work of Don Bosco Institute of Post Graduate Studies and Research, Panaji conducted the Annual Survey of Education Report (ASER) 2014 in Goa. Every year, ASER conducts several surveys amongst children aged between 6 -15 years in rural India to find out about their rate of going to school, basic readability and arithmetic skills.
Since 2009, ASER has also included a visit to one Govt School in each sampled village. Since the implementation of the RTE in 2010, school-visits in ASER have included indicators of compliance with those norms and standards specified in the Right to Education Act (RTE) that are easy to measure.

In 2014, ASER visited 15,206 Govt Schools across rural India. The Annual Survey of Education Report, 2014 was released on 13th January 2015 in New Delhi.

In Goa, the Department of Social Work at Don Bosco College, Panaji co-ordinated the ASER under the leadership of Principal, Dr. Raju George.  56 villages across two districts of Goa were surveyed.  Sixty Students of Bachelors and Masters of Social Work and BA (Mass Media) from Don Bosco College, Panaji volunteered to conduct the Survey. Students underwent rigorous training followed by piloting of the survey conducted by the master trainers Ms. Esther Roe Torres, Ms. Andrea Rodrigues and Ms. Bianca Shetty.

The survey took place across the State of Goa in two phases; the first one being between September 13-21, 2014. 1184 households were covered and 2046 children in the age group of 3-16 years were surveyed.

Ms. Vasudha S., Asst. Professor, Department of Social Work, Don Bosco College, Panaji participated in the 10TH ASER Report release function held at India International Centre, New Delhi. ''ASER partners with 99 organisations/ universities and colleges across the Country to conduct the survey in 577 districts'' says Vasudha.

While sharing his experience about ASER, Leroy Veloso, Asst. Professor, Department of Social Work, at Don Bosco College, Panaji said, ''Last year the survey did not take place in Goa on account of absence of a partner Institution. This was our first time and it has been an excellent for our students to participate and learn from this opportunity.''
