Panjim, Dec. 20. Vasco da Gama, the port city of Goa named after the Portuguese explorer, is well known for various historical reasons, one of which is the 400 year old St. Andrew's Church located at the entrance of the city, run by the diocese. For the first time after the hosting of the relics of Don Bosco in August 2011 in it, it exhibited Salesian fervor once again by hosting the priestly ordination of Deacon Renvick Pereira, on 19 December 2014. He was ordained by Filipe Neri Ferrao, Archbishop of Goa and Daman.
The entrance of the church displayed banners and a cut-out of Don Bosco with boys that announce the year of the bicentenary of his birth. Large numbers of priests were present in the sanctuary to witness the event and bless Fr Renvick. The church was packed to capacity.
Expanding on the motto of the ordination 'Broken and Shared,' Archbishop said, ''Just as Jesus broke the bread and his self, and shared it with others, a priest breaks the bread and his self, and shares it others. He is called to be the other Jesus to his people.''
Fr. Gabriel Coutinho, parish priest of the church, praised the Pereira family for being exemplary Christians who could be relied upon for any Church work. Paraphrasing 1 Corinthians 3:6 he said, they planted, Apollos watered, God made it grow, I am only reaping the harvest, referring to Fr Renvick. Every priest, brother or sister is a sign of the maturity of the parish of which they belong.
Fr. Ian Figueiredo, Provincial of the Province of Panjim, welcomed Fr Renvick as a priest confrere of the province. He thanked his family for offering their son to the Salesian congregation to serve the people of God, especially the young who are poor.
Youth from Pune present for the occasion, sang and danced in jubilation during the felicitation program that followed.
All the family members of Fr Renvick expressed their happiness and joy and wished him great success in his ministry.
