Panjim, Oct. 7. The Salesian Province of Panjim organized a 'Parents' Day' for the parents and family members of Salesians on 5 October, at Don Bosco Youth Welfare Centre, Parra, Goa, as part of the bicentenary celebrations of the birth of Don Bosco. Parents and family members of Salesians working in the Mumbai Province were also invited for the celebration.
Three buses and many private vehicles carrying enthusiastic parents, accompanied by the Salesians, arrived from different parts of Goa on 5th October morning. After the initial 'hellos' and 'welcomes' the Provincial Fr. Ian Figueiredo celebrated the Holy Eucharist with them. In his homily, Fr. Ian expounded on the theme of parenthood with special emphasis on the parenthood of Joseph and Mary, the parents of Jesus, and that of Mamma Margaret, the mother of Don Bosco. He thanked the parents for the generous gift of their sons to work in the Vineyard of the Lord.
After the Eucharist Fr. Ian briefed the parents about the happenings in and around the province, with special mention of the new developments, projects and plans. He requested their continued prayers and support for the same. Fr. Savio Gomes, coordinator of the bicentenary committee then apprised the parents of the plans of the province for celebrating the bicentenary year.
During the family get-together the parents tried to shake a leg or two, laugh, sing and clap to the beats of a few party songs in English and Konkani. There were also a few spot prizes which the parents managed to bag. Post lunch there was a game of 'tambola'. A memento of Don Bosco and a picture of Mary Help of Christians were then distributed to each family.
At the end of the day one could see warm smiles on many faces as all felt a greater sense of belonging to the Salesian family. ''Thanks for everything! We felt so much at home with you, Salesians!'' exclaimed Mrs. Cardozo, a parent. Indeed, the event served to bring together the families of Salesians, who otherwise seldom meet one another. For the Salesians, parents are the first benefactors and educators, and they are aware that it is due to their love and upbringing that they are what they are today.
