Fr Egidio Fernandes Passes Away By Ralin De SouzaPanjim, Apr. 29. Fr Egidio Fernandes, SDB (aged 63) passed to eternal happiness after spending a day of happiness at the province picnic at Cafe Looda, Anjuna, at 3.30 PM today(29th April 2013).
Son of late Robert Fernandes and late Mary Barreto, he was born on 1st Sept 1950, in the native village of Salvador do Mundo, where his mortal remains will be laid to rest.
After a relaxing and fun-filled day where over 40 confreres gathered for the Province outing to distract themselves from the daily routine, Fr Egidio had been looking forward for this day of fellowship with much anticipation in the province. In spite of his periodic dialysis due to his failing kidneys, he made it a point to be present for this moment actively participating in the jokes and the laughter. After a hearty meal, he moved aside of the group towards the washroom where he collapsed, to breath his last within moments. All the confreres tried their best to get whatever medical aid possible, finally getting him to RG Stone Hospital where he regularly for his treatment. He was declared dead on arrival. The province will miss a counsellor, truly Salesian at heart.
He studied in Don Bosco Panjim from 1963, and after his SSC and PUC (Science) he went to the Aspirantate at Lonavla in June 1969. He did his novitiate at Yercaud from May 1970 and received his cassock on 1st November 1970 from Fr L Di Fiore. He was perpetually professed on 24th May 1978 at Lonavla and ordained a Salesian priest on 19th December 1981 at Don Bosco Panjim by Bishop Raul Gonsalves.
His companions admire his intelligence and intuition into situations. He passed all his exams with excellent grades: for his SSC he secured Distinction, First Class for Std XII, Distinction for the Bachelor of Philosophy studies, First Class for Masters in Philosophy and Pastoral Counselling at Chicago.
In his Salesian ministry he was an Assistant at Yercaud and Andheri, Administrator at Fatorda, AntopHill and Koregaon Park. He was Prefect of studies at Sulcorna and Panjim. His contributions to the Catechetical ministry as well as counselling in the province are commendable. The Archdiocese of Goa appointed him as counsellor at the Diocesan Family Counselling Centre, Panjim, where he laboured till a couple of years back and had to give up due to his ailing situation.
The Eucharistic celebration for the deceased soul of Fr Egidio will be held at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, Panjim on 1st May at 3.30 p.m. Thereafter, the mortal remains will be taken to his home for a while. Soon after, it will be carried to the Saviour of the World Church Cemetery, Salvador do Mundo, for burial in accordance with the wishes of his family.
May the Risen Lord bless Fr Egidio with Life Everlasting for his tireless service.
