Seminar on Social Media at Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore

Bangalore, Sep. 30. A two-day seminar on Social Media: Rewards and Regrets was organised and coordinated by Father Gilbert Choondal sdb and Father Previnth Joe Tony sdb at Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore as part of its academic endeavour on 26 and 27 September 2016.
The seminar focused on four relevant areas of interest: the world of social media today, youth and social media, impact of social media on society, and social media for pastoral ministry.  The papers were presented by Dr. Biju CMI, Christ University, Father Bastin Nellissery sdb, Head, Department of Communication and Journalism, Don Bosco College, Angadikadavu, Mr. Victor Satish, ICPE, Bangalore, and Dr. Richard SJ, St. Joseph's College, Bangalore, respectively.

The afternoon session on the first day was interactive moments with youth and adults (parents and teachers). While the youth found social media very useful and rewarding, the adult world could not identify everything in social media as rewarding. The second day was a panel of ecclesiastical representatives to discuss on the rewards and regrets of Social Media for priests and religious. A Decalogue on social media was formulated by the assembly for priests and religious following the panel discussion:

1. Thou shall, with attention, pastor the people of God in their use of social media, these news gifts of God.
2. Thou shall not create anonymous profiles or use pseudo names and shall always identify yourself on the social media as a priest or a religious.
3. Thou shall be responsible for the information shared, the contents generated, the photographs and videos posted.
4. Thou shall not promote or pass on chain mails (related to faith) that offer blessings/curses.
5. Thou shall be messenger of Good News through posts, SMS and other media in social media.
6. Thou shall be careful not to click too hastily the 'like' buttons or accept invitations from strangers without carefully analysing their profile and viewpoints, or forward messages, so as not to go against human, Christian, and religious values.
7. Thou, as a reliable and responsible person, shall check the sources and accuracy of the information available on social media and shall not share false content or rumours.
8. Thou shall respect the privacy of every person and shall avoid discussing personal issues on the portals of social media.
9. Thou shall make sure that the language used in social media is one of respect and tolerance.
10. Thou shall post pictures only after obtaining due permission from those who appear I the photos.
