Salesian university plans special projects to help northeast students

The Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) has announced a plethora of scholarships to help for students from northeastern India. ''The Don Bosco Society is in northeast India for the last 90 years, and both the vice-chancellor and I have been serving the region for the past 50 years,'' Chancellor Fr V M Thomas told a press meet today at Guwahati on the occasion of the university's annual convocation. ''We are not a fly-by-night company, but we are here to stay,'' asserted the priest who is also the president of Don Bosco Society Guwahati. According to him, setting up the university has been ''an ambitious project'' carried out by vice chancellor Fr. Stephen Mavely, who was the principal of Shillong's St. Anthony's College for 15 years.. Read More

On the 9th September 2013, St. Anthony's College, Shillong crossed another milestone with the inauguration of Fr. Joseph Arokiasamy Memorial Block for the Department of Fishery Science by Shri W. M. S Pariat, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya. The block was also blessed by Rev. Fr. Joseph Nellanat Sdb, the Former Vice-Principal who was in service for twenty one years in the college. The College till date continues to uphold the record as the first and only College in the State with a Department in Fishery Science. . Read More

Fr. Rajkumar Fernando and Fr. John Louis Mariapragasam of the Province of Chennai left for Canada on 15 September to take up ministry in the archdiocese of Edmonton. They will be part of the Salesian Province of the United States - East (SUE), as Salesian presences in Canada come under the jurisdiction of SUE. It was in response to the request of the Rector Major that the province of Chennai (INM) accepted to help out the Salesian presences in Edmonton, which is badly in need of priests. Fr. Rajkumar will be placed at St. Andrews Parish in Edmonton and Fr. John Louis at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Sherwood Park.. Read More

Archbishop Emeritus Thomas Menamparampil of Guwahati, a great patron of Assam Don Bosco University, presided over the Sunday Holy Eucharist for the faculty and students on 15th September. Abp Thomas made his opening words from Luke 12:32 saying, ''Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.'' Addressing some 150 students and faculty gathered at the University's air-conditioned conference hall, Abp Thomas said, ''you are in deed lucky to be part of God's kingdom of thought by being here in the University.''. Rickshaw Pullers Keep Faith Year

KOLKATA --In a rare Year of Faith activity held any where in the world, a Kolkata city parish organized a unique programme for its Catholic rickshaw pullers on Sunday 8th September, the birthday of Mother Mary. Of 106 Catholic Rickshaw pullers of the parish registered to attend the faith rally, 69 rickshaws and their pullers started the rally to Auxilium parish Gobra at 3 pm from Dhanapara colony collecting Catholics of the area on their rickshaws. It was an eye catching procession of colorfully painted rickshaws. Their pullers were dressed in red jerseys bearing Year of Faith logo and wearing white caps with ''I Love My Faith'' slogans printed on them. . Read More
