KOLKATA - The Central American country of Guatemala is drawing much interest in Kolkata province as another young priest is set to leave for the same destination to which the first Indian Salesian missionary set off 45 years ago. Fr George Puthenpura born in Kerala made his first profession at Sunnyside Shillong in 1960, a year after Guwahati province was bifurcated from Kolkata province in 1959. After his philosophy studies at Salesian College Sonada (Darjeeling) and practical training in India, Fr Puthenpura did theological studies in Barcelona, Spain. He was ordained priest in March 1970, and became the first missionary ''ad gentes'' from India to Guatemala.. Read More

About seven thousand faithful had a highly spiritual experience of the Eucharistic celebration in the presence of the sacred relic of Don Bosco celebrated prayerfully by His Eminence, Cardinal Telephore P. Toppo, Archbishop of Ranchi archdiocese. Speaking during the homily he underscored the vocation to holiness given by God to every human being. He said, ''We are all called to be like Christ just as Don Bosco was.'' Through his Spirit-filled homily and well articulated prayers, he led the Christian community on 17th Sunday of the year into an intense celebration of the Lord's resurrection which the relic signifies.. About two kilometers before Kunkuri a small township, in Jashpur district of Chattisgarh, the clergy, faithful and people in large big numbers greeted Don Bosco. Women folk and children sang and danced continuously along the road till the Casket reached the Cathedral as the sky kept showering upon them gentle rain. Umbrellas after umbrellas followed the van carrying the Relic. Meanwhile, the bystanders of the township watched in amazement and wonder. The crowd was so big that the casket was lowered with great difficulty. The cathedral was bursting with the large number of faithful. . Read More

HOWRAH - Thirty six children of Don Bosco Ashalayam, were felicitated at a colourful programme graced by Shri. Jugal Joshi (Senior Commandant Railway Protection Force, Howrah), on 23rd July at DBA Headquarters on Belilious Road Howrah. Besides handing over prizes to successful candidates he also released the DBA annual publication. Among those students who appeared for Class X examinations, 26 were awarded, while 10 students were awarded for clearing class XII examination. Of these, 13 were girls. 30 children (24 boys and 6 girls) of DBA appeared for Madhyamik (Secondary) Examination in the month of February, 2011 while 14 children (8 girls and 6 boys) appeared for Higher Secondary Examination.. It was just a year ago that Bocha Ravi, a youngster from a hamlet near Kondadaba (Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh) started his specialisation studies at Kanpur and now having completed that, has six job offers, given his excellent performance as a Chemical Engineer.
