Kolkata, Nov. 22. Samthar, the most recent Salesian mission in the Kalimpong hills situated some 5,250 ft above sea level in the rugged hill terrain, held the Eucharistic procession and celebrated the feast of Christ the King on November 21, 2021.
Father George Thadathil, Rector and Principal of Salesian College Siliguri, officiated the Eucharist in St Alphonsa Church Samthar with Father CM Paul, Vice-Principal (Science), Father Savio Rai, mission in-charge and Father Michael Beng, Assistant parish priest. As many as 150 faithful belonging to some 67 Catholic families from six villages attended the celebration.

The remote hill mission started in 2017 operates in rented homes as the Salesian residence and Don Bosco English medium school from Kindergarten to class III. Samthar is the sixth mission parish under the Darjeeling-Sikkim diocese, starting with Sonada, Mirik, Dhajea, Kalimpong, and Malbassy.

Samthar village, less than one-and-a-half-hour drive by car from Siliguri, is growing in popularity, mostly among foreign tourists. On clear days, the view of majestic Kanchenjunga is brilliant, the third highest mountain peak in the world.
