Kolkata, Nov. 10. The Salesians and Missionaries of Charity Sisters from Boys Town Gangarampur, West Bengal, distributed relief materials at Sundarbans some 75 km from Diamond Harbour on November 8, 2021. The materials consist of rice, dal, oil, blankets and medicines given to 90 families.
Sundarbans is a mangrove area in the delta formed by the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal. The village is 3 hours journey each way from Diamond Harbour. Of this, 60 km island route and 15 km by boat.

The island has a population of about 12,000 people, who depend entirely on agriculture. Due to cyclone Yaas and floods this year, people have lost their crops. Salesians reached Diamond Harbour 20 years ago on December 8, 2001, and today, they cater to some 15 islands of the Sundarban area.
