New Delhi, May. 21. Don Bosco Navjeevan, Chandigarh, has been working for the migrant communities of Chandigarh for the last five years and has made various interventions to enhance the lives of the migrants living in the slums and colonies. The centre runs the Intervenes Drug Users project, Street Children project, Self Help Groups for women empowerment, remedial classes for school dropouts and coaching classes for economically backward children.
As Covid cases were on the increase in Punjab and Chandigarh, Don Bosco Navjeevan plunged into action and reached out to people especially, children and women associated with Don Bosco. Father Regi Tom said that the Government of Chandigarh tried its best to meet the challenges of Covid-19 through the lockdown. Meanwhile, NGOs and other social work institutions stopped working due to a lack of fund. Hence, the government administration requested the NGOs and religious institutes to come forward to help people. Heeding the call, Don Bosco Navjeevan reached out to about 1000 families with ration, distributed masks, gloves, and sanitisers to 500 children and their families. The centre also supplied masks, PPE kits, sanitisers to the Director of Health Services, Chandigarh, to distribute to various dispensaries. The Police headquarter at Chandigarh was given hygiene materials for distribution to people. About 2500 migrant families received ration kits consisting of wheat flour, rice, dal, oil, sugar, tea and salt.

About 1000 families received medical kits consisting of a thermometer, vitamin tablets, tonics, and energy drinks. An ambulance with medical facilities conducts regular check-ups of the migrant population, and they receive medicines to boost immunity power. Ambulance service is also made available to transport patients to the hospitals and back. Don Bosco Navjeevan supports the Government with sanitisers, PPE kits, masks etc. They also provide the hospitals with oxygen cylinders and ventilators.

Counselling and online activities for children like making videos and short movies, drawing and speech competitions are held online to keep the children engaged.
