Shillong, Oct. 29. All the Salesians of the Province gathered at 10:30 am in Karotemprel Hall to listen to and interacted with the Rector Major.
In this one and half hour discourse, the Rector Major frankly and fraternally shared his major concerns of the Congregation and each individual Salesian. 'Meeting face to face with the Salesians is the most important part of my visit', he said. The Rector Major gave a quick overview of the Congregation especially with regard to vocations. The Rector Major acknowledged that 'the Congregation has numerous vocations even till today, thanks be to God!

However with the sociological changes of our time, the needs and concerns have to be tackled as well'. With regard to the large number of Salesians leaving, which is a sad fact, the superior said that 'we need to look into the area of accompaniment, dear Salesians be ready to be accompanied'. Then listing some challenges, the Rector Major expressed the need 'to tackle the problems of non-transparency as consecrated persons, lack of maturity in terms of sexuality and affectivity, and individualistic tendency in our fraternal community life.'

Quoting Pope Francis, the Rector Major brought out the 'greatest problem in the Church today' which is 'clericalism'. Building on it further, he said that the same phenomenon could be found in our congregation as well. The Rector Major strengthened his point by giving practical situations and life events. The talk came to a conclusion with a few questions raised by some confreres and the he addressed all of them and the release of a book authored by Father Johny Eapen, SDB
