Don Bosco Maligaon gears up for expansion in Vocational training for youth

Guwahati, Dec. 13. The blessing and laying of foundation stone ceremony of new wing of Don Bosco Technical School Maligaon, Guwahti was held on Monday, 8 December 2014. The Arch Bishop of Guwahati Most Rev. John Moolachira officiated the blessing ceremony and Salesian Provincial of Guwahati Fr. V.M Thomas laid the foundation stone of the new building. The programme was attended by over 300 people including several of priests and religious from Guwahati town, as well as hostel students, and prominent citizens from the neighbourhood.

Speaking on the occasion the Archibishop thanked the Salesians for taking up lead in number of initiatives in Assam. While laying the foundation stone of the new wing, Fr. Provincial stressed the need of vocational education in the region. He expressed the desire that this institution give skill training to at least a thousand youth at a time in the campus. He further said that the timely sanctioning of the project was the miracle of Mary. ''The work of expansion happens on the same date that Don Bosco began his works for the poor youth of Turin. It is indeed the miracle of our Blessed Mother,'' he said. This new project is supported by BMZ through Don Bosco Mondo, Germany under its title ''upgrade and Extension of the Vocational Training centre in Maligaon''.

Present at the occasion were Rev. Fr. K.J Thomas, the Provincial Economer, Sr. Elizabeth George, The FMA provincial and the village headman from Gotanagar, Maligaon.

Fr. Benny Alex the director of the Technical School placed the Vocational education as the need of the hour for the youth of North East and expressed that given the proper facilitation the Salesians of Don Bosco can cater to many more people with new domains of training at pace with the rapid trends of a digitalised world.

In the recent past Don Bosco School is seeing a fast transformation from what it has been before. The institution which had residential high school earlier is now catering to only various skill development programmes. Number of stakeholders and partners are coming into picture with various skill development initiatives. They include DB Tech national network, Employment Generation Mission (EGM) of Assam, Tata Motors Ltd (four wheeler & driving), Yamaha Training Academy (two wheeler), Godrej & Boyce Mfg Ltd (AC & Refrigeration) and Skills for progress (SKIP) for all non-formal training.

''In the changing phase of the vocation education scenario we see a paradigm shift from an input based system to outcome oriented system where we develop a holistic view of skill training that includes 'learning to know', 'learning to do', and 'learning to be'. And therefore we are on path to enhancing much more in the campus with new developments that are taking place at DB Maligaon for better facilitation and management,'' Fr. Benny said.
