Guwahati, Dec. 10. The blessing and foundation stone laying ceremony of Don Bosco College was held at the proposed campus at 6th mile on Diphu-Manja road on Monday, 8 December.  The hour-long programme was attended by a good number of priests, religious and lay people from around Diphu region as well as a few fathers from Guwahati and Dimapur.
Most Rev Bishop Paul Mattekatt, Bishop of Diphu, officiated at the blessing ceremony and led the gathering in invoking God's blessings upon the dream project.  Speaking on the occasion, he thanked the Salesians for their eagerness to start the college in the diocese of Diphu.  ''This will serve the educational needs of the region,'' he said while expressing hopes that big numbers of youngsters will be benefitted by the college in the coming years.

The foundation stone was laid by the Salesian Provincial of Guwahati Fr V M Thomas SDB, the main mover behind the setting up of the Don Bosco College.  He expressed great joy to see that things were moving fast and stated that every effort would be made to start the classes at the new site by next session.  Presently the Don Bosco Junior College is functioning at Manja on a temporary basis.

Fr. VM Thomas thanked Bishop Paul for his generous offer of the land to the Salesians for use as the college campus.  He noted that the day chosen for the laying of the foundation stone is significant for the Salesians as Don Bosco himself began his work among poor boys on 8 December in 1841.

The Principal of Don Bosco Hr Sec School Sojong, Fr Joseph Teron SDB, stated that the establishment of Don Bosco College in Karbi Anglong is a big blessing from God and expressed his happiness by saying that this would provide varied opportunities to the youth of the region to bring out their potentialities.

Earlier during the programme, the Director of Don Bosco Junior College, Fr Cyriac Vettikathadam SDB,  welcomed, and thanked everyone in his brief speech for their encouraging presence.

The Don Bosco College, an ambitious project of the Salesians of Don Bosco, an international religious congregation known for its educational and youth services the world over, thus saw the first positive step being taken towards its realization.  ''It is going to need a huge amount of resources and hard work of many people,'' said Fr VM Thomas.  But he was hopeful that the providence of God will see to its completion. The function though brief was a meaningful one as it marked the beginning of something unique for the people of the Karbi Anglong district of Assam.  It was also a moment of reposing faith in God and imploring his blessings for the noble venture being undertaken by the Salesians.
