Guwahati, Aug. 2. The newly elected Councillor General for Missions Fr. Guillermo Basañes made his maiden visits to North East India and visited Don Bosco Institute (DBI) on 2nd August and joined the community members for lunch before proceeding to the Provincial House at Panbazar to address the Salesians who were gathered there. He was accompanied by Fr. Paul Olphindro Lyngkot, the Vice Provincial of the Salesian province of Silchar and joined by Fr. VM Thomas, the provincial.
The students of the institute gathered around him and welcomed him with joyful songs, flowers, a traditional Assamese Ghamocha and a DBI scarf. The Executive Director of the institute, Fr. Johnson Parackal warmly welcomed the visiting councillor to the institute, to India and particularly to the North East 'the land of hundred tribes and hundred songs.' He recalled the visit of the former Rector Major Fr. Pasqual Chavez to the institute and said that 'DBI has had many influential and prominent personalities visiting it and those who come to the institute are overwhelm at the magnitude of works that is being done.'

Fr. VM Thomas, the provincial welcomed the visiting mission councillor in the name of all the confreres of the Province of Guwahati and mentioned the great contributions that Fr. Basañes intervened during the GC 27. 'He was at the forefront to support the continuation of the office of the Mission Councillor when some were trying to question its relevancy,' he said.

''Good Afternoon North East'' was the first word of the visiting councillor. He said that the region is blessed with so many tribes and tongues of people. He told the youngster that they are fortunate to be part of the Salesian mission, by sharing and living in the Don Bosco Institution. He recalled the dream of Don Bosco for the young people and said that the dream of Don Bosco is being fulfilled through DBI. He invited all those present to rekindle the mission of Don Bosco. He enthralled the students when he held the guitar and sang ''La...la...la...la...bamba''. He mesmerized those around when he invited all to join him in the singing.
