Silchar Province Commissions Adopt Annual SMART Targets

Shillong, Feb. 19. At the first 'All Commissions Meet' of the Salesian Province of Silchar, held at Siloam on 14th February 2014, the Commissions adopted SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) annual targets in a bid to increase their effectiveness.

The Commissions present - Education, Youth Ministry, Formation, Vocation, Social Communication, and Salesian Family presented a brief account of their activities, difficulties and plans. They also evaluated the work done so far and chalked out specific activities for the year ahead.

By the end of the day-long meeting, a set of concrete, achievable and well thought-out action plan was made. Fr. George Maliekal, the Provincial insisted that the action-plan was not meant to 'limit ourselves merely to these simple, achievable targets' but to ensure that the commissions made 'a great deal of contribution to our common mission' while striving to achieve 'these targets and more'.

In the year ahead, the Education Commission would see about finalizing the Service rules of teachers and others who serve in Salesian institutions. They would also see that everyone in the province is made conversant with the new Child Rights Policy of the congregation.

The Commission for Formation together with the Commission for Vocations would ensure that at least two preliminary Vocation camps are organized at the parish level before candidates are sent for the general annual vocation camp.

The Commission for Social Communication took for itself the task of enhancing the number and quality of the stories filed in the website, by the end of the year. This would be done, they proposed, by imparting training in journalistic skills to young salesians.

The Technical Education Commission would see to calling together the directors of institutes that imparted technical training in the province in order to chalk out the programs and take steps to enhance the quality of the various trainings.

The Evangelization Commission was urged to create awareness in all salesian settings that 11th of each month is to be observed as Salesian Missionary animation day.

The Salesian Family Commission would give priority to organizing the Past Pupils Movement. It was proposed that each institution could have a unit of its past pupils and while retaining its identity, get it amalgamated to the larger body of the province. The commission would also see to greater involvement and animation of the salesians in the Cooperators units, many of which are managed by the FMAs with much sacrifice and efficiency.

The meeting also deliberated on a list of programs to be implemented in the province as part of the Bicentennary celebrations of the birth of Don Bosco.

It was proposed that all commissions meet twice a year and the delegates of the commissions meet with the provincial council once a year.
