Shillong, Nov. 5. Shillong: It was a moment of great joy for the faithful of Mawlai Parish, Shillong when on 27th October, the Parish commenced its yearlong celebration to thank God for the 75 years of its existence. The Jubilee Year was declared open by his Grace Arch. Dominic Jala SDB, the Archbishop of Shillong Archdiocese by hoisting the Jubilee Flag at 10 am. The Guest of Honour and Health Minister, AL Hek unveiled the jubilee plaque soon after the unfurling of the Jubilee flag.
The Holy Eucharist which followed the inaugural function was offered by Fr. George Maliekal, the Salesian Provincial, Fr. Roland Kharkrang SDB, the Parish Priest of Mawlai, Fr. Jose Varickasseril SDB, Asst. Parish Priest, and other priests.  The faithful of the parish, numbering several thousands attended the Holy Mass along with a large number of religious sisters.  Also present at the Holy Mass were prominent figures like Mr. Al Hek, the Health Minister of Meghalaya and Mr. Embhahlang Syiemlieh, the MLA of Mawlai.

The Parish Priest in his welcome speech called the opening of the Platinum Jubilee \\\\'an important occasion for the Parish\\\\'. \\\\''It is an occasion,'' he said, ''to thank God for the blessings he has showered on the Parish''. He fondly recalled the priests who served the Parish in the past and have gone to their eternal reward.

The Archbishop too in his sermon expressed gratitude to the Almighty for working wonders in the Parish and in the life of the parishioners. The Archbishop in his sermon also reminded the faithful to pray for peace in the society. He recalled how in the eighties, Mawlai passed through experience of bloodshed and instability as a consequence of societal conflict. ''Conflict in the society has an adverse effect in the lives of the poor and the common people, hence we need to pray for peace in our society,'' the Archbishop said. He also asked the people to pray for the soul of businessman Vikash Nandwal who succumbed to the burn injuries in Delhi.

Later in the day, the annual Marian Procession of the Parish was held. The procession that began at 1.30 in the afternoon saw thousands walking, braving the rain and expressing their love and veneration to the Mother of God through hymns and prayers.

It may be recalled that 75 years ago, when the parish of Mawlai was established, it comprised the entire Ri-Bhoi area. Since then, numerous parishes have originated from it, the latest being the parish of Umbir, due to be inaugurated later this month of November.
