Guwahati, Oct. 1.   Former Chief Minister of Goa and All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Shri Luizinho Faleiro released a book titled Press and Social Responsibility authored by Fr  George Plathottam SDB  at Hotel Raddisson  in New Delhi, September 25.
Shri Faleiro handed over the first copies to Dr. Ron Harris, President Media Alliance International, USA, and to Member of Parliament and former Union Minister Vincent Pala.
The event was held during the inaugural ceremony of the three-day Kingdom Media Conference held in New Delhi. Some 250 delegates working in media across India and abroad participated the event.
While complimenting the author for the timely and relevant work, Shri Faleiro said media revolution has changed the world, but media persons must provide the soothing balm and be like surgeons and healers who can repair the hole in the human heart that longs for peace and well being.

Dr. Plathottam speaking of the book said the social space in the newspapers is shrinking and there is need for greater social responsibility of the press. He stressed the role of journalists and all those who work in the media or own them   in bringing greater values and ethics to the media. The press, a profession hallowed by Mahatma Gandhi and many freedom fighters, today are increasingly blamed for reporting blood dripping stories that deal with violence and crime than news about development, peace and people's movements. This needs to be remedied, he said.

The book is based on a study of nearly 25,000 newspaper reports from 312 issues of two major newspapers in Northeast India through a content analysis. It is part of the doctoral research done in the North Eastern Hill University by the author.

In his landmark research work, the author has not only examined the social responsibility of the press but has proposed ways to rebuild the image of the press at a time when the social space in newspapers are fast shrinking and compromise with the values of the press are on the increase.

Fr. George Plathottam who has spent some three decades in Northeast India now works as national secretary for communications at the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) and Director of a national media training and research institute, NISCORT.

He is a member of several academic and consultative boards related to media.

The book is published by New Delhi based Segment Books.
