Shillong, May. 11. The First Chapter of the New Salesian Province of Silchar has given special focus to Salesian ministry in Tripura. Tripura is the region in the province that has the largest population, but smallest percentage of Christians.
Taking into account the responsiveness of the area, the Chapter underscored the need to focus on Tripura in a special way in the coming years.

Tripura, the smallest state in Northeast after Sikkim, has a population of 3.6 million, 30% of which consists of its indigenous population. After seventy years of missionary presence in the state, the Christian population remains incredibly low and accounts for only a 3.4% of its total population.

In this scenario and considering what the congregation considers as urgent developmental steps that Tripura stands in need of, the Chapter members unanimously agreed that the Province should make Tripura an area of priority.

The Chapter was of the opinion that the Salesian works in Tripura be scaled up by further consolidation of its existing works, expansion to other areas of the state and by engaging in a greater variety of ministries.

As of now Tripura has 6 Salesian presences in which works of education, evangelization, youth works and cultural promotion are being carried out.
