Kolkata, Aug. 28. Salesian College Sonada (SCS) was accredited by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC)  in 2004 with a C++ Grade, in the processing becoming one of the first colleges of North Bengal University to go for accreditation.
Accreditation is given to a college for a period of 5 years after which  it needs to be re-accredited. NAAC is the agency appointed by UGC and funded by the Central Government to accredit some 400 Universities and over 20,000  Colleges in India. The purpose of accreditation is to ensure quality creation, quality enhancement and sustenance in the institutions of higher learning all  over India.  NAAC has laid down seven criteria to assess quality in an institution pertaining to all aspects of the life and structures in an academic institution.

For SCS the accredited status lapsed in 2009 and immediately there upon began the  tedious process of going in for re-accreditation. There are two essential conditions that need to be met before  sending the compliance letter for reaccreditation. The first one is a functional website of the college and the second is an active Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).

After meeting these two pre-requisites, Fr. Mathew George was appointed as the Coordinator  by Fr. Provincial in 2010 for the making the elaborate Re-accreditation Report  (RAR) to be submitted to NAAC and the work began in full swing, ably assisted by Mr. George Cherian in gathering and compiling the institutional data. All the HoDs and especially Fr. George Thadathil, the Principal, constantly supplied the inputs and  suggestions in  the complication of the report. By mid July the RAR was ready for submission to NAAC and was approved by the Governing Body of SCS.

On 2nd August 2011,  five copies of RAR was submitted to the NAAC office at Bangalore. The visit by the Peer Team from NAAC to verify the data and to decide upon the grade for the college is expected to take place during the second week of November.  With most of the recommendations of the last Peer Team visit  implemented, SCS can look forward with confidence to a higher grading this time.
