DON BOSCO ON AN ''ASHWAMEDHA'' IN JOWAI DIOCESE

By Anikuzhikattil Joseph
Guwahati, Jun. 12. Shillong, June 09: The pilgrim relic of St. John Bosco, the saint of youth, is on an ''aswamedha'' all over the Diocese of Jowai. Beginning its journey from Shillong at 06.00 am on 09th June 2011, the convoy entered the diocese of Jowai, around 7.00 am. There was a big reception for Don Bosco at UMMULONG. The cortege of Don Bosco's relic could not proceed because of the crowd and had to stop at the tri junction in order to give the people to have a chance glimpse at the sacred relic of the saint, the father and friend of youth. The Christian community at  Ummulong has a very strong presence.  Began right from 1926 by Don Dominic Farina SDB. They remain very much attached to the Salesians and Don Bosco even today.
The next stop was at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Jowai, the headquarters of Jaintia Hills. It is one of the earliest catholic centres in the region. The land in which the church and the presbytery of the Catholic Church stand today was bought by Mgr. Louis Mathias in an auction in early 1922. Jowai was the first mission district started by the Salesians of Don Bosco in Northeast India.   A huge crowd was waiting to receive the great founder of the Salesian family.

Fr. Mariano Uget and Fr. Dominic Farina opened the centre in 1926. The Church dedicated to St. Theresa of child Jesus was blessed by Mgr. Mathias in 1934. The mission district of Jowai made steady progress in the following decades and several new Parishes were created in the region. The parish of Jowai was passed on to the hands of the diocesan clergy in the year 1976.

Emperor Ashoka of the kingdom of Magadha, used to send his horse loose every now and then to determine his control over the land. Anyone who obstructed the movement of the horse was considered challenging his kingship and would have to be prepared for war to re-establish his supremacy in the kingdom.

Don Bosco's relic was in a conquest of souls in the diocese of Jowai, as thousands and thousands of Catholics as well as non Catholics vied with one another to get a glimpse of the pilgrim relic of Don Bosco through Jaintia Hills, where even though the Salesians began the mission is totally dissipated in their presence.
