Mawkyndeng Honours Don Bosco Relic

By John Basumatary
Guwahati, Jun. 10. ''Happiness is an inside job'' says Fr. G.K Warbah sdb, Parish Priest of Mary Immaculate, Mawkyndeng. The people of Mawkyndeng have lots of reasons to rejoice because of the spiritual presence of Don Bosco, though not physically but through his authentic mortal remains.
In order to keep Don Bosco alive and fresh in their hearts for the many blessings they received through the Salesian missionary works, the parishioners conducted a day of prayer, cultural shows and exhibitions to stay tuned with the 'Father'. Pilgrims turned up in huge numbers to venerate the saint despite the inclement weather.

Fr. Warbah in his homily told the congregation that Don Bosco is a saint of joy and happiness who wanted souls alone for God. He always wished happiness in the lives of the people especially the young and to keep this momentum going, the Salesians work heart and soul for the youth keeping in mind the motto of Don Bosco 'da mihi animas caetera tolle' (give me souls, take away the rest).

Here in Mawkyndeng to continue the vision of St. John Bosco, the Salesian mission runs schools, dispensary and a handicap rehabilitation centre. Evening school is also provided for those who are unable to join the day classes. Such are the works carried out in dedication and love.

The parish is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary and the mission has a significant history since the time Catholic Church entered the Northeast. The mission at Raliang was started by two German Salvatorian missionaries in 1892. The outbreak of World War I halted the missionary works of the Salvatorians and the Jesuits took over the administration of the mission. The mission suffered initially during the War periods.  It was with the help of the Salesians under the stewardship of late Mgr. Louis Mathias sdb, the Church at Mawkyndeng got a face lift from doldrums. The Salesians entered Raliang in 1922. Ever since left no stone unturned to continue the work for the growth of the Church.

At present according to the statistics given by Fr. Warbah, the parish of Mawkyndeng is a stronghold of the Catholic community in the entire district. The parish has 11,000 Catholics with 23 villages under it.
