Fr. Bimol Hembrom Laid to Rest

Kolkata, May. 8. The mortal remains of Fr. Bimol Hembrom the Rector of Don Bosco, Azimganj were laid to rest, in the Salesian Cemetery at Bandel Basilica in the afternoon on May 6, 2011, amidst hundreds of mourners especially from Central Bengal.  
Rt. Rev. Julius Marandi, the bishop of Dumka presided over the three hour long funeral ceremony, assisted by Fr. Bertie Fernandes the VG of Krishnagar diocese, concelebrated by many Diocesan and Salesian priests. Fr. Thomas Ellicherail the Provncial of Kolkata led the final commendation rite.
A tearful farewell was accorded to Fr. Bimol whose body was laid out in the Basilica at 11.30 AM.  His close relatives along with the boarders of Don Bosco Azimganj and Shanti Niloy as well as parishioners from Azimganj, Monigram and Boropahari filled the Church spilling into the corridors of the Basilica. There was a continuous line of mourners paying their last respects.

The funeral rites began at 1.30 PM with Fr. Jose Pampadiyil the vice provincial welcoming everyone to the celebration, inviting the mourners also to remember Fr. Joseph Verzotto who died on this day in 2009 as well as Br. Joseph Paranthara whose month's mind occurs on this day.

Fr. Dennis Murmu the liturgical commentator introduced the celebration saying ''The Lord is my shepherd and he has called Fr. Bimol so that he can pray for us, his dear ones.  In His time God gives eternal rest to Fr. Bimol a good Salesian priest.''

At the beginning of the Eucharist Fr. Provincial said, ''We are strengthened by the presence of Bishop Julius Marandi.  We welcome him to this celebration, to preside over this function, to give us his blessings, to share in our sorrow and to pray for us.''

Bishop Julius at the introduction to the Mass said ''I welcome you all to this Holy Eucharistic celebration for our brother Fr. Bimol Hembrom. I offer my condolences to you dear Fr. Provincial, all the Salesian Fathers and Brothers, brother, sister, relatives and friends of Fr. Bimol.''

Introducing the homily Fr. Provincial said, ''The Lord Jesus has gathered us again to contemplate the meaning of death and resurrection.  It is just a month back that we all gathered for the funeral of Br. Joseph, 79 year old Salesian Brother and today Jesus is gathering us around the mortal remains of Fr. Bimol Hembrom who was in the prime of his life as a priest, to contemplate also on the shortness of our life.''

After the communion service condolence messages were given by Bishop Julius, Fr. Shanti Soren the parish priest of Don Bosco Azimganj, Suman Soren the student representative from Azimganj, Mr. John Mondol on behalf of the teachers of Don Bosco School Azimganj, Mr. Nishapoti Hembrom from Boropahari parish, Fr. Joseph Pauria on behalf of all the companions and Fr. Jose Pampadiyil on behalf of the Province of Kolkata.

The Solemn Mass which came to an end at 3.00 PM was enlivened by the choir who sang hymns in Santali, Bengali and English, animated by Fr. Raymond Tudu.
The rites at the cemetery were replete with hymns and prayers in various languages.  Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet were continuously recited till the tomb was sealed, candles lit and the wreaths and the beautiful flowers symbolizing the resurrection, were spread out.

During the rites notable was the presence of the three companions of Fr. Bimol from New Delhi Province namely, Fr. Joy Jacob, Fr. Kapil Toppo and Br. CJ Thomas.  The entire group is celebrating the Silver Jubilee of their profession for which they had gathered in Bandel Basilica a month back, in which Fr. Bimol too was present.
