BANDHAN MEET 2011 AT DON BOSCO, BANDEL By KNOTS CorrespondentKolkata, Feb. 20. The ICSE 1985 batch of Don Bosco Bandel came together on the 13th of February 2011 at their alma mater after 25 years to relive their school days and to felicitate their principal, teachers, the present school staff and to recognize the great impact the institution had on them in placing them on the map of life.
Don Bosco school, Bandel seems to set up a tradition of students returning to their alma mater when 32 students of 1985 ICSE batch got together to celebrate the 25 years of their passing out of the school. This is the second batch of the school that gathered to celebrate this unique silver jubilee. Fr. Albert Thottungal sdb, their principal present on the occasion said, ''it was wonderful to be part of the celebration of your 25 years of graduating from Don Bosco school Bandel in 1985''.
The day began at 11.00 with the morning assembly where these men now in their midlife lined up as school kids would do and relived what used to happen in the school assembly hall. The high light of the day was the next two hours spent with the then teachers in the class room where they learnt the lessons (of life) and interacted with the teachers. Many of the teachers of those days came to spend time with their beloved students, now men shaping the destiny of the world from Canada to Vietnam.
Recalling the experience Mr. Satyaraj Banerjee, the convener of the event and the president of the past pupils unit said, ''After 25 long years spent in finding our way about in this world and trying to establish ourselves we are back again today to spend the day with our classmates, their families, our respected teachers and staff members of DBB.''
The ex-bandelites spent much time moving from place to place discovering the school they left behind only too happy to see the sweeping structural changes that came about in the school. The classrooms, the library, the grounds, the prayer room, and office of the principal where they dared not to enter... they all brought many memories back.
The felicitation that followed was an occasion to express sentiments of gratitude to Don Bosco, the Salesians and their teachers. Addressing the gathering, Fr. Johny Nedungatt, the present rector said, ''Don Bosco, one man brought hope to millions, one man changed the course of history, one man dared what everyone else avoided. My dream is that taking inspiration from our father and founder Don Bosco, that one man because of whom your own life has changed, you would go beyond a social function and touch the lives of some young people somewhere in the world. Pick up one young person who needs you, and be the hope for him or her.''
The day ended with partying in a neighbouring community hall where everyone had time and space to express the joy of meeting each other after so many years. Concluding the day, Mr. Rupam Deb who flew in from Singapore said, ''I was very happy to be here in DBB for Bandhan and meet my old friends after all these years. I see this as a great opportunity not only to meet friends but also to network and benefit from the networking.'' The celebration may be summarized in the words of Mr. Mohinder Singh Paul Minhas from Vancouver who took time to be alone in the school campus, ''Thank you for making space for me after so many years.''
