Dimapur, Jan. 29. Congratulations to Fr. Jose Palely SDB, the former principal of Don Bosco College, Maram and the present Provincial Economer of the Salesian Province of Dimapur who has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the Manipur University. His thesis, Tradional Adminstrative System and Customary Laws of the Maram Tribe has been highly appreciated and is of great benefit for studies on Maram Tribe.
The history of the Marams, as that of many other tribes of the Northeast India, is based on the folklore and oral traditions of the community, because of the absence of historical writings and historiography. Folk literature is the lore of unlettered peoples, transmitted by word of mouth. It consists of narratives, poems, songs, myths, dramas, rituals, proverbs, riddles etc. It is known fact that until about 4000 BC, all literature was folk literature. The myths, legends and tales transmitted through oral traditon are shared in their embellishments. Thre is instant recognition of such tales and myths and all versions appear right and true. The large area of consistency in their accounts of genesis transmitted from one generation to another is remarkable. Dedcing history from folklore, legends and community experience is, therefore, the only way to arrive at a more or less accurate understanding of the ancient history of this people.
