Kolkata, May. 24. Darjeeling: Radio Salesian 90.8 FM - The Voice of the Hills, the first college Community Radio since 2016, based at Salesian College, Sonada in North Bengal, launched 'Azaadi Freedom Songs' competition to mark the 75th year of India's Independence. India won its freedom from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947.
An Independence Day initiative by Radio Salesian in collaboration with two youth groups, Darjeeling NGO Mukh Bandh Kaam Suru (Shut Up Start Work) and Salesian Youth Movement Kolkata, calls to celebrate diversity and harmony. ''It is our humble effort to promote fraternity, liberty, equality and celebrate diversity through the creative medium of a music video,'' said Principal of Salesian College Siliguri / Sonada Father George Thadathil. He spoke at a virtual launch of the event held at the Dhajea campus, May 24, 2021. Freedom Songs competition consists of a creative music video, song lyrics and melody in original, sung either in English or Nepali by two or more persons.

''We want to celebrate and promote unity in diversity, communal harmony, brotherhood and sisterhood of humanity, love, friendship, compassion, tolerance and acceptance of each other,'' said Radio Salesian Programme Director RJ Samir explaining the theme of the competition. Samir further added, ''Songs must fight hatred, violence against women, intolerance and other caustic and divisive activities which separate people in the lines of ethnic, linguistic or religious affiliation.''

The youth groups can register in the Google Form link given on the Radio Salesian Facebook page and submit the production on or before July 28, 2021. The competition videos will premiere on Salesian TV YouTube Channel on August 5. The voting will end on August 12 and judged for the maximum number of views. Besides the first, second and third prizes, there are two consolation prizes, including a cash prize worth rupees 20,000, a trophy and certificates.
