Rector Major Visits Chennai to mark the Platinum Jubilee of INM , 3-6 Feb 2009
``I feel so much at home with you,`` said the Rector Major, Fr. Pascual Chavez, who was given a rousing welcome on his arrival in Chennai this morning by the Salesians, young people and members of the Salesian Family of the Province of Chennai.
Fr. Chavez is in Chennai to take part in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Province, which was formally constituted 75 years ago, even though Salesians were here since 1906. The brief welcome ceremony, in many ways, resembled the traditional welcome accorded to royalty. Fr. Stanislaus Swamikannu, Provincial of Chennai, offered the Rector Major the traditional ponnadai (golden shawl) and placed a royal crown on his head, symbolizing his role as the leader, father and guide of the Salesians and the Salesian Family. As the Rector Major was led to the podium, little children offered him floral tribute and local musicians played nadaswaram, the traditional wind instrument, announcing the arrival of the honoured guests. Fr Chavez was accompanied by his Vicar Fr. Adriano Bregolin and the Regional Councillor for South Asia, Fr. Maria Arokiam who also were given a warm welcome in South Indian traditional style, with ponnadai, garlands and music.
