GC; Extra-Capitular Activities
by Maria Arokiam Kanaga (MAK)
This news bulletin is for those who are curious about some tidbits of life in the Pisana.
One cannot be studying and discussing documents all the time. Hence some activities not connected with the theme of the chapter are also offered to the GC members. Some of them are Sunday outings, afternoon games, special dinners in groups, visits to the city, and the like.
Saturday afternoon and Sunday we are free. The provinces of Italy offer the possibility of visiting some cultural sites in their territories. For example, last Sunday, 9th March 12, 2008 two bus-full of confreres went for a cultural visit to Florence, sponsored by the provinces of Ligure-Toscana. In the two Sunday after Easter the provinces of Naples and Adriatica offer an outing to Naples and to Assisi respectively. All expenses paid!
Every afternoon, weather permitting, there are games. The young and not so young members take part. It is interesting to see even General Council members such as Fr. Gianni Mazzali playing basketball and football regularly. There are those who are used more to bocce, as it better suits their health and temperament, but not less passionate for that!
Groups are invited by UPS for dinner with them. Yesterday the Faculty of Education Sciences of UPS invited all its past pupils for a dinner. The other Faculties, hopefully will wake up soon, particularly Theology, of which I am a past pupil!
A visit to the Vatican for an audience with the Holy Father is programmed sometime after Easter. All are on the outlook for it. Special celebrations of Easter Triduum are available in the Pisana or in St. Peter`s.
Lots of ``gifts`` are being offered to the chapter members - mostly books and some small souvenirs. But all are wary of carrying weight back to the provinces. So, the gift often gets left behind.
Food is abundant. Since people come from all over the world, they offer a variety so that everyone can find something to eat. No one is complaining. A business company does the catering and they are very efficient. Apart from the main meal served at table, there are side tables where assorted items of food are placed. As soon as that table is open, we can see the members making a beeline to it, in search of delicacies. As regards beverages are concerned, red wine, white wine and beer are offered in lunch and supper. At the end of the meals there is always the possibility of taking a sip of a `digestive`, either coffee or some liquor. No one has been drunk so far!
