Tsunami Tamil Nadu : INM Photo Report
January 3, 2005
Dear Friends,
The immediate relief works for the tsunami-hit victims are (Food, Clothing, temporary shelter, medical assistance, etc.) well underway. There has been so much goodwill from people irrespective of religion, language and community, which has lightened the agony in some way. People have been shifted to different camps in interior areas and some of them have taken asylum with their relatives. They would prefer to have a home of their own as quickly as possible.
Besides those living along the affected coastal areas, hundreds of pilgrims who went to Velankanni, the coastal shrine of Our Lady of Good Health, were victims. Their families have to be helped out as well.
The future of these people and their livelihood has to be seriously assessed and planned. An independent team set up by the CRI Tamil Nadu (Men and Women Religious Congregations) to assess the situation and make a report on the spot is busy studying the situation. This will take another couple of days. The CRI Tamil Nadu will gather the report from the team and analyze it as quickly as possible and make realistic proposals for future action plan to rebuild the situation (houses, nets, boats, venture capital to resume the job, etc.). For all these, lot of money will be needed. We cannot propose anything concrete at present with regard to our action plan except the immediate relief work that is being carried out by the Religious and the like-minded NGOs.
We will have to study how the Government is going to respond and where will its focus be. Lot of money has been offered to the Central Government and the State Government from various sources. Accordingly we will launch our response to the affected people, not yet reached out by the Government. We would like to involve the victims themselves in rebuilding their future. They know well what needs to be done to rebuild their lives.
Yours truly,
Fr. Bellarmine SDB
