Whitewashed Intellectuals (Poem)

Chennai, Nov. 6. A question that comes up everytime i am alone. Am I living my salesian to the full?

Whitewashed Intellectuals

One day
The whitewashed
Intellectuals
Of my religion
Will be interrogated
By the simplest
Of my people

They will be asked
What they did
When their God died out
In them
Slowly,
Like a sweet fire
Small and alone

No one will ask them
about their white robes
their long siestas
after lunch,
no one will want know
about their sterile Combats
with ``the idea
of the nothing!``
no one will care about
their higher knowledge or theological learning

They won`t be questioned
on Greek mythology,
or regarding their self-disgust
when someone within them
begins to die
the coward`s death.

They`ll be asked nothing
about their absurd
justifications,
born in the shadow
of the total life.

On that day
the simple wo/men will come.
They will come�

Those who had no place
in the books and poems
of the whitewashed intellectuals,
but daily delivered
their bread and milk,
their tortillas and eggs,
those who drove their cars,
who cared for their dogs and gardens
and worked for them,
and they`ll ask:

``What did you do when the poor
suffered, when tenderness
and life
burned out of them?``

``Where did you go when the strength-less
forced to take human shit, when their
compelled to drink
urinals of high caste people?``

``Why were they silent when the voiceless
raped, and their black
and tough skinned
husbands were tortured to death?``

Whitewashed intellectuals
of my religion,
you will not be able to answer.

A vulture of silence which
You have observed
Every time when my people
suffered, ill-treated, raped, tortured
will pick at your soul.

And you will be mute in your shame

Because
God lives
in the poorest of the poor.
He dies
when they die
you
need to answer�
You ARE RESPONSIBLE for his death
What have done
to stop his death?

Yes these are the few questions
will pick, prick your souls.
And you will be mute in your shame�..
