Chennai, Oct. 23. We speak of a ``options``! Option for the poor, Option for the Young, Option for the Oppressed and so on! today, we have a fundamental otpion to make - an inevitable either/or - To BE or to DO!

With all our so called accomplishments in new and newer frontiers, we are breaking new paths. It cannot be denied! But along with it, the fact that fragility of vocation has grown to unprecedented proportions, is very clear from the statistics as reflected upon by the Regional in the meeting on 23rd with the Chennai Region Confrere. Where lies the problem? The world today is a world of doing - i need to do, i need to prove, i need to show that i can do! To be is to do, says the world today. And that is why the older you get, the less you matter. The less productive you get, the more burdensome you become.

Unfortunately our salesian life seems to trace the same line. The irony is that our religious life is precisely to propose a counter world order! But we have failed to do it. We are called primarily to BE! To be religious, to be holy, to be signs and bearers of God`s love. To Be is not as easy as to Do! Thought of people like Henri Nouwen and Eric Fromm on this aspect of Being, in contrast to Having or Doing, are a clear challenge to us! And above all these, Jesus` call is to first BE - if we dont heed Jesus might tell the people, ``Do what they say, but not what they do!``

Lets begin with considering our personal life of holiness (substitute it with `integrity` if you feel `holiness` is outdated) as our primary call. Let everything that we do, follow from that personal integral life and the world will see that we dont merely do, but we ARE!
