New Delhi, Jun. 1. Have we fallen into a rut, a habitual way of seeing and doing things, that we find very hard to break out of? Are we afraid of the uncertainty and pain that accompanies any change? Can we embark upon a `Journey of Reinvention` in these challenging days of the pandemic Covid-19 and bring about the required changes in our lives? We have accomplished a lot in our lives, updated ourselves, availed ourselves of opportunities to renew ourselves, improved the quality of our lives and deepened the meaning of our own lives. We have accepted our life as a gift from the Lord, sought ways and means to learn more about it and appreciate it. We have put in tremendous personal dedication and undergone great sacrifices to express our preferential love for the poor and the young.
At the same time, we have to admit that by and large many of us do not feel the urgency to renew ourselves, to acquire more depth in our lives, or to grow in our life. We tend to be complacent, feeling that we are doing reasonably well and so there is no need to change. We find ourselves fallen into a rut, a habitual way of seeing and doing things, that we find very hard to break out of. We say we are too busy to take time off to renew ourselves, whereas in reality we recognize it is only as an excuse. We are afraid of the uncertainty and pain that accompanies any change. But the fact remains that we are unwilling to take steps to change ourselves.
Our approach to everything in life tends to be merely human and secular. With many of us, there is little reflection, no in-depth study of issues facing us, no attempt to discern what God wants of us in a particular situation. We are busy organizing things one after another. We apply all too human criteria in resolving problems. And we hardly think in terms of responding to God`s call to us through persons and situations. In other words, our life is lived all too much on the surface; the depth-dimension of our life and activity tends to be absent. We find ourselves at times facing a loss or a lessening of values in our lives. With a secularized approach to life, we tend to downgrade the importance of the spiritual in our lives.
The one constant thing in our life is change. We cannot avoid it and the more we resist change the tougher our life becomes. We are surrounded by change and it is the one thing that has the most dramatic impact on our lives. Change has the ability to catch up with us at some point in our life. There is no avoiding it because it will find us, challenge us, and force us to reconsider how we live our lives.
Change can come into our lives as a result of a crisis, as a result of choice or by chance. In any of these situations we are faced with having to make a choice - do we make the change or not? I believe it is always better to make changes in our lives when we choose to rather than being forced to. We have to accept the unexpected events (crisis) in our lives because it is these events that challenge our complacency in life. What we can control when we are experiencing these challenging events, is how we choose to respond to them. It is our power of choice that enables us to activate positive change in our lives.
So, let us embark upon what I like to call a `Journey of Reinvention` in these challenging days of the pandemic Covid-19 and bring about the required changes in our lives.
