THARAKAN John , Hyderabad says, Dear General Council Members By John Tharakan

Hyderabad, Feb. 26. I am a confrere from the Hyderabad province and interested in the congregation. In the gospel today Jesus says, ``If anyone wants to be first, he must make himself last of all and servant of all`` (Mk. 9, 30-37). I wish Fr Angel Ferdandez Artime, Francesco Cereda, Bro Jean Paul Muller and the rest of the general council members fulfil this call and unfulfilled mission of Jesus by their example at GC 28. My suggestions:My suggestions:
1. Lead by example. Announce one by one that you will not want to continue in office and that you would like to serve in any capacity in your province.
2. Show the way: Suggest to amend the constitutions so that no office, including that of the Rector Major, will never be more than once or more than six years.
I owe this idea to the document, ``New Wine in New Wineskins`` that offers challenges to the religious after 50 years of Vatican II (Perfectae Caritatis) and a professor from Ghent University. For example: ``A revelatory indication of this impasse is the persistent centralization of decision-making power and the lack of turnover in the governments of communities and institutes`` (NWNW, 22).
You will have many questions. Let us pay attention and answer our own questions. Then let us address our questions to Jesus who first spoke to the disciples and speaks to us now. Let us not keep away from Jesus like the disciples did and quarrel among ourselves. Jesus will be delighted we follow him in spirit and in truth as servants of the young and of the dis-advantaged in these times of bitter power struggles and increasing inequalities.
Thank you and God bless you.

PS: I am reminded of the Gospel of Mark (8, 14-21) that we read on 18th February, Tuesday. ``Keep your eyes open; be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.`` From my formation years, the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod had been competing in me with the leaven of Christ. Symbolically, in the churching, the yeast has got concentrated into a 34mm*33mm* low grade glioma on my right frontal lobe, Sylvian lobe. The neurologists are eager to take it out. I am in the queue for the surgery. I pray sincerely that the leaven of Christ will transform me. I have been saying this to my friends who are concerned and praying for my well-being. I am inviting them to join me in in accepting the leaven of Christ. You are welcome into our company.
