The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has broadened the definition of corporal punishment. It now includes even calling a child ``mindless`` or ``stupid``.

Kolkata, Aug. 24. While, there may be some who might still argue that corporal punishment is the best or the only way to discipline children, the time has perhaps come for teachers and school authorities to look for another alternative to discipline students as the commission says no to corporal punishment in any form.

``Even calling a child an idiot or stupid or mindless, or asking him or her to write sentences condemning their mistakes in class or slapping a child are a severe insult and humiliation for the child`` which amounts to corporal punishment as per the directive.

The list also includes acts which may have grave consequences as far as the health and mental well-being of the child is concerned such as electric shocks and acts leading to insult, humiliation, physical and mental injury, and even death.
