Chennai, Feb. 5. Our birth was in the oratory; Our root is the oratory.

When Don Bosco began his first boarding school in 1863 everyone in and around Italy was apprehensive about the whole issue. How is it that the Salesians of Don Bosco, born in an oratory became almost overnight specialists in running boarding schools? He accepted to open the boarding school provided there was an oratory attached to every boarding. Our birth was in the oratory; Our root is the oratory. But what is the situation of today? We have several boarding schools and hostels but our oratories are slowly dying away except a few. To be more specific, there are a very few oratories in Chennai province out of which only two oratories are still active but the others are dying out. We often hear the phrase `Do not behave like an oratory boy` `these boys will behave like this only`. It is actually a crime. We tend to escape the situation by blaming the boys for their arrogance, indiscipline etc. The roots have almost become the weeds now.  Before people could say, `how are the Salesians of Don Bosco born in boarding school going to run oratories` we should revive our oratories and thus return to the mission which was at the heart of Don Bosco.
