New Delhi, Jul. 26. This piece is prompted by Fr. Joseph Puthenpurackal`s suggestion in Speak Up that every professor should first undergo a full course on Missiology.

Fr. Puthenpurackal recommended: ``I may be not too wrong, if I affirm that all theology professors, and professors of all other sciences - if they are serving the Church - should first undergo a full course on MISSION THEOLOGY and some practical MISSIONARY EXPERIENCE.``

From the perspective of one whose foremost interest is Missions, the suggestion makes sense. But I guess, those in other disciplines can also suggest something similar - all professors should have a full course in their particular discipline. For example, I as a psychologist, might suggest that all professors who deal with people must undergo a full course in psychology (By the way, the Vatican has recommended that all formators and seminary professors should have a good understanding of psychology!).

I don`t mean to downplay the importance of the Missionary nature of the Church. But to expect every professor, whatever be their own specialisation, to undergo a full course in Missiology, that too before they go in for training in their own discipline,  doesn`t seem to be very practical nor an ideal. Let each discipline have its own importance in the mission of the Church.

Fr. Puthenpurackal himself said in the same piece: ``By missionary I mean one who is SENT by JESUS Christ. One who has this awareness that he/she is SENT by JESUS  for carrying out JESUS`  mission -  whether he/she is in a village or in a town, in a school or in  a college, in India or abroad - is  a  MISSIONARY. It does not matter where you are. What matters is WHO  sent you.``

In the light of the above observation, it is much more important that these other ``professors`` be really competent in their own field and be true to their mission in the Church. Where is the time for a full course in Missiology when they have to spend years  mastering their own discipline and keeping up to date with developments in their own profession?
