Chennai, Nov. 13. On the first day of the Seminar, eminent social activists have challenged the participants on many grounds. One of the interesting points was on the extent of involvement of Salesians in the field of Human Rights. It was argued that our institutions are not in a position to involve in the human rights issues in India due to our dependence on the government in some way or the other.

On the first day of the Seminar, eminent social activists have challenged the participants on many grounds. One of the interesting points was on the extent of involvement of Salesians in the field of Human Rights. It was argued that our institutions are not in a position to involve in the human rights issues in India due to our dependence on the government in some way or the other. It is also said that when we get involved in the fight for justice or human rights, we will have to engage the government either directly or indirectly because often they are the violators of human rights.

In this context it appears that Salesians can involve as individuals to a great extent in the defence of the young but not as institutions. There were others who said that it is better not to involve the institutions at present because doing that we may lose even what we have and it would be a great lose if our institutions are looked upon with suspicion.

What we can do is to have a re-look at our institutions with the perspective of human rights. The Rector Major is calling all the provinces to have this dimension of human rights in all our settings. It is good that this becomes a topic of debate and deliberations in our chapters.

If we are passionate about the welfare of the young people, we will find ways and means of incorporating the principles of human rights in all our settings. We need to find creative strategies to overcome the confrontation with the government and at the same time carry out the human rights programmes of the government to get the legitimacy for our actions.

There are many human rights mechanisms created at least in theory and therefore we could rightfully monitor such mechanisms and help them to perform their duties.

We will continue to search for a rightful place in the human rights mission of the Church.
