Scouting in St. Bede`s (INM)
By Wilfred SDB
Chennai, Oct. 5.     `To create good Christians and honest citizens` is what Don Bosco wanted to do with his boys. Scouting too aims at the same end which is clear from the scout promise: ``On my honour, I promise that I will do my best, to do my duty to God and my country, to help other people and to obey the Scout/Guide Law``.
Hence we use scouting as a powerful means to attract the young at the same time to instill values in them. As a part of the regular scouting programme we had the Scout camp for the scouts of St. Bede`s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School from the 27th of September to the 30th of September.

Scouting began in 1907 when Robert Baden-Powell, Lieutenant General in the British Army, held the first Scouting encampment at Brownsea Island in England. Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is a worldwide youth movement with the stated aim of supporting young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, so that they may play constructive roles in society.

The scout camp was held at Sagayathotam in which 37 scouts participated. They were accompanied by three scout masters namely Mr. Peter, Mr. Sarana and Mr. Victor, Fr. Thomas, Bro. Wilfred, Bro. Packiaraj and the other staff namely Mr. Ramamoorthy, Mr. Albert and Mr. Chinnappa. The scout camp was for four days.

On the first day the scouts were divided into four patrols and the patrol leaders were appointed. Baden Powell said, ``In Scouting, a boy is encouraged to educate himself instead of being instructed.`` In the afternoon there was a session on the scout law and the scout promises. In the evening some scouting games were held for them in which they participated very enthusiastically and joyfully. After the tea they had the preparations for the camp-fire. After the supper a camp-fire was held in which each patrol came out with two items. In between the items some yells, claps and action songs were also given which kept the camp-fire very lively and interesting.

The second day began with the BP exercise after the wash at 5.30 am. Then the students participated in the Eucharistic Celebration after which they had to get ready with their troop inspection. The flag was hoisted and the breakfast followed. The morning sessions were held in which the flag song, the prayer song and other important things were taught. Be Prepared... the meaning of the motto is that a scout must prepare himself by previous thinking out and practicing how to act on any accident or emergency so that he is never taken by surprise. Hence after the break a practical session was held on how to prepare the fire-wood for lighting with only two match-sticks. During the afternoon session more practice was given for learning the flag song, prayer song, camp-fire song and the taps. Some action songs were also taught to them.

A hike was organized in the evening for the children. Speaking about the hike, Jack Benny says, ``A scout troop consists of little kids dressed like schmucks following a big schmuck dressed like a kid.`` It was a wonderful experience for the children as they enjoyed the beauty of nature around them. At night a camp-fire was conducted and each patrol came out with three items. After the camp-fire the students retired to bed.

The same programme of the previous day followed in the morning. During the morning sessions the students were given training on following the tracking signs. After the break they were taught six knots that would be useful in their lives. After the lunch a hike was organized to a Military camp. It was a 7 km hike which had tracking signs and messages all along the way. Hence the hike was not felt as a tiresome one but as an interesting one as the scouts were interested to know where the next message would be.

In the military camp, the DIG Mr. Chelladurai, out of his generosity and good will, had arranged a high tea for all the scouts and a demo of different events. The demo of dismantling and re-assembling (by blind-folded jawans) of three different weapons, the hiding of terrorists in unexpected places and gymnastics were performed by the jawans of the camp. It was a new and a rare experience for the scouts and will remain in their hearts for a long time.

The camp-fire at night was held in-door on account of rain. In spite of that reason the programme went on well. Though the boys were tired after a long hike they were eager to participate in the events of the camp fire. After the good-night and the taps all went to bed.

In the final day the boys got up as usual but did not have the BP exercise. The mass was solemnized by the scouts. After the breakfast a photo session was kept. Then Fr. Lawrence Varaprasadam, the Rector of Sagayathotam, explained about the Adrenium that was being cultivated there. After the break there was the lowering of the flag and a short ceremony before it in which the best patrol, the best PL and the best scout were announced. With that ceremony the Scout camp came to an end.
