LEADERS FOCUS ON THE SERVICE TO THE YOUNG
By Thomas Anjili
New Delhi, Jul. 24.  The leadership of Delhi Salesians spent four days, 20th - 23rd July, focused on their ministry and mission to the young. The Provincial and Council was in joint session with the Rectors, Parish priests, In-charges and Commission Delegates.

It was a time to keep the youth at the centre of their life and attention. Hence, the group had inputs and discussions on the Policy Statement and Guidelines on the Protection of Minors. The presentation was done by Fr. Joe Arimpoor. During this and the ensuing group work the participants reviewed the current perspective on how the rights of the child ought to be known and how they are desecrated through violence - sexual, physical, mental, emotional and religious - and sought how to create a child friendly ambient. Fidelity to the Salesian spirit and the Preventive system would enhance the child`s rights, protect them and enable them to grow and mature healthily in a secure ambient and with caring elders who accompany them. The selection, formation and accompanying of the Salesians and the other staff was seen to be of great importance. The sporadic reporting in the media in recent weeks of instances of violation of these rights with tragic consequences added to the relevance of the topic.

Further enrichment came through the presentation of the letter of the Rector Major on Salesian Youth Ministry. This also led to the need to review the Educational and Pastoral Plan and requires building up the Educative Community, reaching out to the neighbourhood and being relevant to those who are not institutionalized and to the weak. In this context the Volunteer Movement, the cultivation of it and support to those who make themselves available were considered as essential to multiply the service to the needy youth.

The Right to Education Act and its benefits and implications for our ministry were presented by Fr. Binny Issac, the Principal of Don Bosco Alaknanda.

The four days were rich in the contents presented, the quality of reflection and interaction and the impact they could have on the participants and the communities / institutions they animate. They go back with great hopes and aspirations and a resolve to make a difference by living out the Salesian charism.
