Skills Training For BPL Youth of NE - 2

Guwahati, Jul. 16. The inauguration of the training program at Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong was held on 30th June 2010. Mrs. V.R. Syiem was invited as the chief guest to inaugurate the program. Mr. Patrick Nongrum, the headman of Laitumkhrah, Mr. Celestine Nongspung, Deputy Director of Civil supplies, Fr. L.B. Anthony, Director Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong, Fr. Benny Alex, Principal of DBTS, Br. Valeri and Br. Muscat, Sr. Helen Puwein FMA from Bellefonte Convent were also present on the occasion. There were approximately 50-60 students along with parents or guardians.

The special SGSY scheme of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India functions with the sole objective of providing employment linked-market oriented training to youngsters in the age group of 18-35 years from the Below Poverty Line sections of the country. The scheme is instrumental in providing skilled migration and mainstreaming opportunities for the youth in the employment providing sectors of the economy. Under the SGSY special Projects, the MoRD has granted four projects to Don Bosco Tech which will give a new life to thousands of youth across the country. ``This Project intends to provide Job-oriented courses for BPL youth to make them employable at the completion of their courses. In North-East India alone the project target is about 10,000 BPL youth to provide them job in the next 2 years, while the whole India target is more than a lakh.  In Meghalaya, the skills development training will be imparted at DB Tech School, Shillong and at RRTC Umran. In Assam, these trainings will be imparted at DBI, Kharghuli, Guwahati and at DB Tech School, Maligaon. Bosco Reach Out, the nodal office will supervise the training programmes in the different centres along with AIDA, Dimapur, Nagaland``, said Fr. Johnson Parackal, Executive Director, Bosco Reach Out, Guwahati.

The course content would comprise of (a) Technical Skills specific to the trades or service, in addition to this is (b) Soft skills such as communication skills and spoken English (c) Life skills including personality development. The course duration is for 3 months and the programs offered are free of cost. Only a caution deposit of Rs. 500/- will be charged at the time of admission which is refundable at the completion of the course. Financial support for food, lodging and uniforms will be provided. Placement assistance will also be provided such as how to prepare biodata, mock interviews and online registration of candidate for jobs.

However, the candidate has to fulfill certain criteria. He/she has to be under the age group of 18-35 years. A person holding a BPL card with card number or job card having completed100 days of work or ration card holders is eligible. He/she has to be a school dropout. From class VII-Class XII pass/fail. In order to apply, one has to fill up the application forms which are available at the centres imparting training in Assam and Meghalaya. They should be submitted with required documents to get the confirmation of admission. Maximum seats per course per batch are 35 and admission will be on first come first serve basis.

There will be 3 batches of students in a year, in a course of four months duration. The first month comprises of imparting life skills and soft skills to trainees followed by skilling candidates in their respective domains in the second month and the third month is preparation of trainees towards work readiness and assisting them for placements. The fourth month starts with the admission and selection of candidates for the next batch.
